To Jack,

I know that the girl you are talking about is Glenda Chloar because I was sweet on her, but she preferred "older men". I do not know what happened to her.

My name is Judy Mayo. I graduated with Martha Thurmon Helton. We have become great email buddies. She introduced me to her blog and I just kept going and going. I don't know all the people in the Helton Family but I think this is a wonderful avenue to keep up with your family. As I strolled through the Helton Family archive I began to plan one for my family. I hope you don't mind if I "borrow" your idea. All the pictures were great. Thanks for sharing your lives with the people who know "someone" in your family. Please keep up the good work. Don't lose track of what each other. A family is a beautiful thing!

I don't know what it is about this comment page. I know that more people vist it than leave a comment. It is very cold here. Wish that more people would leave a note. Just hi would do. When I was in service I had not written Mother in quiet awhile and I wanted to go into town (I was stationed in the Philippine Islands) and a friend volunteered to write this girl that I had been writing so I could go ahead and go. About a week later the Base Capitan called Me to his office. When I went in (just knowing I was in trouble) He looked at me and said that it don't look like you have a broke hand. My friend had wrote that I had broke my hand was why He was writing for me and I don't have any idea how Momma got the address to write the captain and ask about me. Needless to say that never happened again. I wrote mother and explained what had happened. She wrote back and said that just a line to let her know that I was OK was good. So the next time I wrote I just wrote a line or two and the next letter I got said that you could write a little more. You don't realize how your parents miss and like to hear from you until you have kids of your own away from home.

I hope everyone Has a very merry Xmas. Was glad to hear from Emily. It don't seem possible that the little blond headed girl that used to come to Mooring Grocery could be old enough to have kids grown and out of college. I have many fond memories of Mooring Grocery store. More later. Jack Helton

This is Emily Lovings Turner and I just sort of stumbled upon this website and boy does it take me back to the Mooring days!! Martha and I became friends on Facebook and one of the posts mentioned her blog so I did a little searching and came across the Helton website. Martha is a fabulous webmaster! I am living in Humboldt, TN and am a school librarian here in the city system and also working as part-time librarian at Jackson State Community College. I have 2 daughters...the older, Whitney, is a pediatrician in Memphis and the younger, Katy, is in marketing in Chattanooga. Those of you from Lake County who read this post will remember my sisters, Deborah and Lynn. Deborah is retired from the Air Force and living in Charleston, SC and Lynn lives with her family in Union City, TN. I'll be checking back here often. Thanks for all you hard work, Martha

ok, nobody else seems to be adding updates, but I am going to hit my "Brag Box" for a moment.....Dad had his 2nd knee replacement last week, is home and doing fine. Carly, George's 17 yr.old daughter, ended up 4th in the NATION at the All-American Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, OH in Oct with her horse HF Rolex. He's only 5 and competing against 15-20 yr olds. The class had 100 competitors! Looks like we will have another Georgia Bulldog in the family (sorry Vols fans)- she's all but signed to the equestrian team! George and I have been busy competing too. We both took 2nd in SC in Aug, went to our national championships in Chicago Ill in Sept. and George ended up 12th! We were in the same division and I should have ended in 6th, but had a pilot error and fell to 21st (very costly). Then 2 weeks ago George came home from FL with 3rd, and I should have won, but blew it again, but only dropped to 6th. One of these days....
Hope all are doing well. You guys could give us more updates ya know!!!
Love to all, Peri

Hello Helton Family!
I am Tammy Stegall Stoope.  I lived next door to Mr. & Mrs. Helton for years.  Mrs. Helton use to keep me when I was little and I played with Paul.  I reminded him via email how he use to pick on me all the time.  He agreed.  The photos brought back lots of memories.  I enjoyed seeing the old Helton house.  I live in Paris, Tn.  I married Terry Stoope from Paris.  I have two sons, one daughter in law, one 2 yr. old grandson and one on the way.  I have lived here for 26 yrs. now.  My dad died in 1986 and my mom lives in Tiptonville.  Thanks Paul for giving me the Helton website.  I enjoyed viewing it very much.

HI all! Dad had his surgery Monday and came home Thursday. He is doing well. Has lots of exercises and rehab to do; keeps him busy most of the day. And he fills the rest of it bothering Mom to "fetch" stuff for him. He's being a pretty good patient though, I think (Mom hasn't threatened to kick him out yet!) Things are going as expected and he seems in pretty good spirits about the whole thing. I'll try to keep you informed on how things are going. Peri

Things are going well for the Ponders, too. I retired about a year ago from K-C, and my wife, Barbara, and I are enjoying life here in Neenah for a while longer before we move south. Hi EVERYONE!! I thought I'd wish all a very Merry Christmas before I forgot! Hope you all have a safe holiday season. I remember many hours of sitting around a pot-belly stove this time of year. I know I'm truly thankful for central heat these days (there's a heavy frost out and it's 28 degrees!). Nothing much going on here, just day to day stuff and getting ready for Christmas. Looks like we'll all be gathering Tues am at Mom & Dad's. Glad all of you are still around to enjoy the season. Uncle Jack, how many is it getting to be now? :-)   Love ya! and Merry Christmas! This is Rebecca, and this is just a note about the Millers.  Karen is doing fine, and Mama is doing fine.  Although Karen has been married for several years, she refused to have kids. She says she is too spoiled to spend time and $ on a kid.  Rats!  I wanted a niece or nephew.  My family law practice is very busy (the holidays are always hot) and Mama is doing well.  Mama and I took a trip to California this past April, and we are going to New Orleans in November.  We love and miss all of you guys.  And, of course, we always think of and miss Daddy, Jim Miller, who died just over a year ago.

Love all of you,  Rebecca

Stupid errors kept sneaking in and keeping us from completing competitions. But the rest of the world had better look out! When Peri finishes, she really does it with a bang- 3rd place with Calvin (the one I've had 4 years) and 2nd with Zach (the one I "stole" from George)! It feels great to have both of them shine!! Doing great otherwise too! Peri

I'm am so ready to get back out in the country so I can sit outside and listen to the crickets and frogs! I hate living in town. There are people walking up and down the street in front of our house all of the time. And we live on a busy street so we hear cars constantly. I feel like my neighbors are right up on us. Hi everyone. Paul and Rania are doing fine down here in Georgia. The kids are doing good, too. Alyssa is 8 months old now and crawling around is trying to say dog. Nicole is doing good in school and is taking tennis lessons. Paul and I played in a tennis tournament down here and won the D bracket. I'm not sure if everyone knows, but Paul and I went on the Rachael Ray show (not the cooking show, but the talk show). It was a show for time management for me. I will post another update when we know when it is going to air. Billy and Linda are doing great. They really enjoy their grandchildren and the kids love going over there. Rania

We are fine in Pennsylvania. We were in Arkansas last weekend for Michael's college graduation. Before that, Martha went down to Arkansas early because I had to be in Miami Beach for a week - nonwovens convention. I also went to New York City Monday April 30th to go to the Spiderman 3 premiere. Martha's niece is a studio executive for Sony Pictures in LA, she and her husband came to the premiere and I met up with them. We had total "behind the ropes" access. I met all the actors, director, etc. Other than that, it has been pretty quiet up here in the woods. Nice spring weather. PDH

I am glad that this is back up and running. I know it is a headache and I appreciate the work you do to keep it going, Thanks. We are doing ok. Jon broke his left thumb last Sunday playing ball when a runner slid in and Jon tagged him. We hope that it will be only three weeks before he can play again Carolyn and myself both really enjoy watching him play. Tyler (Kee's son) is playing ball also. Sydney (Heathers Daughter 5) is playing soft ball. Zack (Pam's son 5) is playing T ball. Greg's sons (Carson and Kyle) play baseball so it pushes Me to make some of their games. Carson's team won last night for the first time and Kyle's team also won. Greg said that I brought them good luck. More later Jack

It was a great day here in Pennsylvania. It warmed up some from last week's cold. Still some snow on the ground, but it is about all gone. We went to Hershey, PA today, about an hour from here. They were celebrating "Chocolate Covered February", a month-long series of activities and events at Hershey World all centered around chocolate. The lunch buffet had a cauldron of hot fudge that you could put on any dessert from the buffet. Needless to say, I don't want any chocolate for a while. PDH

Hey MHT what do we need to do to get people to sign in the guest book when they visit? If everyone would just realize what a great way to connect with other family members this is, we might do better. I know as a large family that we do not remember birthdays like some people do and we do not visit as often as we should, but it is very simple to keep in touch. It was great to see the picture of Billie's new granddaughter and to see that Karen had fond memories when she looked at the pictures on the web site. Maybe I am just being sentimental but I don't call or see everyone as much as I would like. It is a great feeling to know that some other family members are looking at the same pictures and reading the same few lines. Jack

Peri...great to hear from you! We considered going to Times Square for the ball drop New Year's Eve, but decided the crowd was just too much to handle. We know the area well, I can't imagine that many people packed in there. We might get up the courage next year, especially if someone else wants to come visit and go with us. We went to the city a few times during the holiday season, we definitely will go back next year. Glad you celebrated Billy Gene's retirement. BILLY GENE HAS RETIRED!!!! Believe it or not! No big bang, just a quiet dinner with EVERYONE- Linda, Billy, Paul, Rania, Nikky, Alyssa, Peri, George, Carly and Bret (Carly's boyfriend). Dad wouldn't even let us pay for dinner. Now we'll just have to see if Mom can put up with him all day every day :-). Carly is living with us now....boy is that an interesting adjustment. Suddenly you have a 15 year old in your house! It's really good though. I feel she is in a much better place! The only problem I see is she competes in the Quarter Horse world and I'm in eventing. It might as well be field hockey and soccer (or something similar that goes on at the same time all year long!). Hope all had a great New Year! Uncle Paul I was thinking of you guys as I watched the ball drop! It sure looked cold! What Uncle Jack said is VERY TRUE!!! I'd love to keep in touch periodically and see what is going on Miss all of you greatly!Peri

Hi hope every one is having a great New Year. I sure am glad this wet weather was just rain. I think that most every one that checks the guest book don't realize how much every one else would like to hear from them. A long letter would be great but a short note would work and make me ( and I am sure every one else feels the same way) better. Maybe it is hard for everyone to realize how much they are loved by a lot of other people and how they like to share part of their lives with family and friends. Jack

It is too late this year, but next year we need more visitors during the Christmas season. We have made several trips into New York to see the sights and the city is truly amazing. You can see in person all of the things you have always seen on TV and in the movies, from Macy's (Miracle on 34th Street) to the Rockettes Christmas Special at Radio City Music Hall. This past Saturday, we were in Times Square, saw the tree at Rockefeller Center, had lunch at Mickey Mantle's restaurant, walked thru Central Park, shopped at FAO Schwarz, Macy's, Tiffany's, Cartier, and all of the stores down 5th Avenue. We happened to walk by the Nokia Theater where they were doing the Heisman Trophy presentation - I talked to Darren McFadden, the Arkansas Razorback who came in second in the voting. You can always find something going on, the city truly never sleeps. Come visit us! Paul Helton

Will, Bernadette, Dozier and Michael are all flying up here to PA for Thanksgiving! We are so excited! They begin arriving on Monday... Thursday will be eating a big turkey and watching the Dallas Cowboys, Friday will be watching the ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS play LSU, the Saturday we will leave early and spend the entire day in New York City doing sight-seeing stuff. They all leave Sunday afternoon to head back south.... Kinda makes the "No place like home for the holidays" song with the lyrics "heading for Pennsylvania and some homemade pumpkin pie" seem a little more realistic this year. Paul and I will fly to TN/AR for Christmas on the 19th of December and be there until Dec. 27th. We would love for anyone to come up here and visit us....Martha

Jon and I (believe it or not) have started coon hunting. He said that he liked it better than play station. I had bought an original mountain cur coon dog, as a puppy and she is almost a year old now and the man that I bought her from loaned us an older dog to hunt her with. We have not done much catching yet but we are having fun. It is pretty bad when you start trying to forgot who you are playing before you get beat. Of course it is easier to have fun now. Jack

Sorry about all the SPAM that has been on our guestbook. I am in HOT AND HUMID Houston, Texas until Sunday...when I will return home to Pennsylvania. I finally managed to get my program loaded on Will and Bern's computer. Hopefully I can stay on top of this spam again -- at least until the weekend. I am working with my server to get rid of the problem, but please have patience during the process. Will and Bernadette are doing fine - Michael is healing also. Happy 55th Birthday yesterday, Paul! *My flight was great from Little Rock to Houston - thanks to some wonderful pills my doctor gave me to take pre-flight!!!! Martha

Martha, So sorry to hear about Greg! Glad he is doing better - Michael had an emergency appendectomy early Monday morning in Little Rock. Luckily I was in Ridgely and was able to get to the hospital VERY QUICKLY. He is feeling much better today, but still moving slowly. I will be going to Houston, TX Saturday morning to visit Will and Bern for a week, then back to Pennsylvania on the 22nd. Needless to say, I am not looking forward to getting on that airplane! Charles William - This is Martha, the real Martha Helton, Jack's sister. I had almost forgotten you existed. How nice to hear that you are still alive and well. Hope that all of your family are well and life has been good to you. By the way "All Heltons" Greg Helton had pneumonia and was in the hospital. He is now out but still does not feel good. He feels exhausted most of the time and has very little energy. The doctor told him to rest as much as possible. As we all know that is hard to do when you have to take care of three small children by yourself. Remember Greg and his family in your prayers. Martha

One last note on Mark and Heathers fire. Insurance has paid off and they will be ok as can be after loosing everything. Some things just cannot be replaced. They were lucky the photographer that did their wedding called a few days befor the fire and asked what to do with the negetives and Heather told them that she would let them know in a few days so maybe they can replace them. Some times you have to look but you can always find something to be thankful about. Jack

Looks like Martha put her story on the front page. While she is gone, I have had a little excitement, too. I was in the driveway yesterday afternoon working on an outside light when I turned around and there was a HUGE black bear standing in the street. He had come out of the woods next door but I had not heard him. I moved behind my truck and took out my camera phone to take a picture. When I stepped out from behind the truck, the bear saw me move and jumped into the woods behind the house. I did not get the picture, things just happened too fast. Today I stepped off the distance he was from me - 30 yards. Too close for something that big and wild. I tried to find some tracks in the woods, but there are too many leaves and rocks. Two weeks ago, our garbage can had been turned over. Someone told me it was probably a bear that did it - I thought they were just joking. Now I believe them. PDH

Mark and Heather went to the insurance company today and they told them to find a rental house and they would pay the rent for up to 1 year. As of now they don't know for sure what they are going to do. I told Mark and Heather that they got through the tornado and the injuries to Shelby and they will get through this. At least they were no physical injuries this time. We are so lucky that Heather and Sidney were not taking a nap at that time. Keep them in your prayers. Jack

Heather - What do you mean she is the only one you are going to have????? How is your mother? Tell her "Hello" for me. For anyone interested. I went to mother's this weekend and she is really doing good. I believe she is more alert and looks better. I think it is good that someone is staying with her during the daytime. She has someone to talk to. I am glad that Paul likes his job and you all are getting settled in. Moving is hard work. Rebecca and I are going to sell and move somewhere - God only knows where. We are all fine. Does not seem right that Jim is dead. When I go outside I look for him to be wandering around the yard somewhere. Have to go. Love to all. Martha M. Oh yea - Brenda Crittenden called me and Coach Jackson died this past weekend. He lived at a nursing home in Paris Tn.

Hello Heather - I am glad that you are o.k. Kyle is allergic to almonds. The other night he came through the house running and hollering Auntie, Auntie. Carson was right behind him. I said what is wrong Kyle? He said that Carson had an almond and was trying to wipe it on his (Kyle's) mouth. Sure enough Carson had found a box of mixed nuts and had an almond in his hand and was tormenting Kyle. Hope everyone is doing fine. I love all of you and hope you are having a wonderful day. I wish more people would leave a note when they access this page and just say hi I am ok. That would be like when I was in service and was not writing mother very often and I got a letter from Her that said just a note saying that I was o.k. would be enough. So I sent a 2 line note that I was o.k.. My next letter was fussing about not writing a longer letter, but a note was better than nothing.  (BE HAPPY) JACK

We just got back from Alabama where Jon was playing in the 12 year old Dixie Youth world series and I just checked the guest book. There is not room enough here to tell how much Jimmy meant to me. I could sit here and go on and on about things that I remember about Jimmy (all good). I am sure we all do some things in our life that we are not proud of I know I have. I know that God knows a good person when He sees Him and I know that Jimmy was a good person. I had been in the hospital awhile back and Jimmy called me and we talked. I was really glad to hear from him. In fact He called at least twice. The last time I talked to Him I told him that I loved him and He said that He loved Me too. I am so glad that I got to tell Jimmy that before He left us. I plan on seeing him sometime in the future. If God is willing a long time for now I hope. No matter how long, I will not forget Jimmy Miller, My brother in law and friend good bye for now. Jack

Thanks to all of you for your comments concerning Jimmy. It is times like this that make me realize just how much memories mean to me and the people which make them. I love all of you and I know that Jimmy would have loved the special comments and the idea that you have such fond memories of him. It is true that Jim loved and protected Rebecca and Karen in every way he knew how. It is really great to have a large wonderful family. Again I love you all and I wish you the best in life. You never know when death will creep up on you. Don't put off telling someone you love them or being kind to someone this minute of the day because you do not know whether you will see or talk to them ever again. Life is short and it can be cruel.

The first time I remember seeing Jimmy was at Dianne Riley's house where he was practicing in the band. He was the lead singer and about the cutest boy I had ever seen in my life. I was probably in the 5th grade. June and Dianne were best friends and I loved going to watch the band practice. I think it was Dianne, Owen, Jimmy, Joe Glenard and maybe Horace Jr. - not sure. Then many years later he was my Brother-in-Law! I admired his love of and dedication to the Memphis Police Department. His stories were the best, especially when told in his soft, slow and sweet voice. Oh, my how he loved to talk about his girls! He adored them and was so proud. I will miss him so much - Martha Thurmon Helton

I don't know if you remember, but Jimmy was a very talented artist. He was very good at sketching cartoons and could have easily been a commercial artist. It amazed me to watch him start with a blank paper and lead pencil to create (without anything to reference)a cartoon character just like you would see in the comic strips. He was also a good singer, the lead for Owen Lavenue's band in high school. I wish I had a penny for every .22 rifle shell we shot when he would come from Chicago for vaction at home in Ridgely. Who could ever forget his famous "boating accident". Getting Mama to drive a car (the one and only time she ever did), hitchhiking (mostly walking) all night from Fort Campbell at Thanksgiving when he was in the National Guard, being shot at while on the job as a Memphis policeman, sitting on the front porch at the cabin in Petit Jean State Park just talking and enjoying watching it rain, listening to him brag about his girls, listening to his tall tales.....the good memories come flooding back. Rest in peace, Jimmy. Paul Helton

In memory of Uncle Jimmy, I would like to pay my respects to Aunt Martha, Rebecca, and Karen.  I haven't seen you guys in a while and I hope yall are doing well.  It's been years since I last saw Uncle Jimmy. My fondest memories of him are from the annual 4th of July gatherings.  I always thought he was really cool when I was little because he was a K9 cop.  He always made Will and me laugh.  I regret not seeing him before he died. I'm sure he is with the Lord now, and he is at peace in Heaven. We'll miss you Uncle Jimmy!  Michael Helton

In loving memory of Jimmy Miller... I have so many wonderful memories of Uncle Jimmy. He always had a funny remark or a korny joke to tell me. I can still recall so well playing softball on the Fourth of July, and Uncle Jimmy was always the pitcher and always the coach. He always had a way of teaching you something every time you were around him. He had such a clever way of looking at things. He was a hard worker, a great Father and a fun Uncle. We will all miss him very much. I love you Uncle Jimmy, Heather

Jon, Hand-eye coordination is key. Do gymnastics and any plyometrics. They focus on balance, coordination, and vertical leaping. Also when you are blocking always remember the lowest pad wins. Get low! Practice walking around in your house all day on all 4's like a bear. Get to where this feel normal! Leg strength and balance are the most important thing! Good luck! Will

He just finished spring training for football and got called back for the last week. There were about 40 6th to be 7th graders out and only 7 got called back.. so he was proud of that. He is playing tight end maybe Will could give Him some pointers? Will write more later. Jack

I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. Shelby is returning to school tomorrow! She is so excited. She has missed all of her friends so much. She had her follow up visit today with her neurosurgeon and they took x-rays of her head and he said everything has healed perfectly. He took the neck brace off of her and told her to move her head up and down for him and she was so scared to move her head without the neck brace. But, it didn't take her long to get over that! I have pictures of Shelby's house after the tornado if anyone wants me to email them the pictures. Everyone keep praying for her Mom and Stepdad, they still have alot of healing to do. Thanks again, Heather

Jack - Thanks for the updates and I'm glad to hear Shelby is doing better. Hopefully she will get to go home soon. Looks like there were more tornadoes over close to Nashville causing a lot of damage. Arkansas has the reputation for lots of tornadoes, Tennessee can't be far behind. PDH

Martha - Yes I got the pictures - two of them are already on the site - The one of Mama and Daddy is on the Home page and the one of Greg's boys is on Jacks gallery. The old one of your Mama and Daddy is not opening - can you send it the way that you sent the others? Thanks a bunch - Send more - more - more - Martha T. H. Jack - I am thrilled at Shelby's progress. So many people over here in Arkansas are praying her through this awful thing. Tell her everybody loves her.

I went to see Shelby today and She is coming along quiet well. She still sleeps a lot. You have to wake her up to talk to her. Befor I left I asked Her if she would open Her eyes wide, grin real big and tell me that She loved Me and she did and made my drive back home easier. Keep Her in your prayers. Jack

Hello, This is a great website. Martha, I have not had time to get the pictures together that you requested. I will be glad to scan them when I get the chance. It will probably be sometime this summer when we are not so busy here at the university. The girls are fine. I hate to see you all move so far away but I will probably see you all as often when you move as I do now. Jack, I am sorry to hear about Heather's step daughter. It hailed here hail as large as a quarter was all over the ground and Rebecca and I found one as large as a hen's egg. Not much happening. It is time to start mowing again. That takes me all weekend and then I go to Mother's every other weekend and stay Saturday and Sunday. I try to get bathed, hair done, nails done, house cleaned, washing done, and get her out for a while. Is Michael moving with you all? Rebecca and I are flying to Mimai this weekend. We will leave Saturday, and will stay Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and come back on Wednesday. Have to go for now. Take care. Kiss to all. Martha (The real Martha Helton)(a little humor there).

I still enjoy recalling the summer I lived in Jackson and helped Jack coach Greg and Kee's Babe Ruth baseball team in Dyersburg. We won the league season and got to coach the All-Star team, which of course Greg and Kee were picked to play. We were one game away from the State Championship. Who would have thought Jack would still be coaching baseball....and internet/computer savvy! PDH

I think it is great to have access to this web site and think we all owe Martha Helton a big THANK YOU!!! My family is doing great. we are looking forward to baseball season this summer. We had a great season last year. Our travel team was 14 and 3 in class and was 16 and 8 overall. My league team won the league championship with a 18 and 1 record so I picked the all star team and we won the district at Ripley Tn. went to the state and won 2 and lost 2. The team that beat us (Wayne County) went to the world series and were beaten in the championship game 2 to 1. So we were put out by a pretty good team. Will add more later. Jack Helton
